Color inspires me. I love bright happy colors. Pops of color put me into creation mode but for so long I haven’t used it in the way I want to. It’s as if I was embarrassed at the way I want to use color in my life even though it excites me to see a bouquet of beautiful colors.
Think about what really inspires you. I mean what makes your heart sing? What makes you excited to explore? What creates confidence down to the bone? Confidence so that you don’t have to make decisions based on what others’ think of you? It’s funny how what inspires us the most is directly reflective or our personalities.
For me, it’s color. Here’s an interesting story. I’ve always said, ‘i don’t care what other people think.’ And while that is true to a degree, I recently realized how much I’ve been making decisions (in this article I’m exploring that particularly with color) based on what other people say or what I’ve allowed myself to be conditioned to believe.
This may seem small to you. ‘First world problems’ but this story is very impactful on what I’ve found out about myself. I hope this story helps you create clarity on what REALLY inspires you and who’s actually calling the shots in your decision making.
My husband and I have been debating over what color to paint our kitchen. For 5 years!! Yes, you read that correctly. Kyle was fine with the Doo Doo brown color on the walls, I was… uninspired.
Should we go with a light neutral, a gray base which everyone tells me is popular, what looks good with the back splash someone else installed, what would all our guests like?
One day at the paint store, collecting samples for the hundredth time over the past 5 years, I saw a color that inspired me. As soon as I saw it I thought to myself, ‘oh yes, that makes me happy happy happy!’ Then it hit me, I’ve been going about this all wrong. I never asked myself, ‘what color inspires me?’
I knew this was the right color. I saw it, bought a gallon and that night it was on the walls. (Thank you Kyle!) The color decision felt right. I also felt liberated like I went against the grain and did my own thing.
I went for a bright bold blue.
What a simple question that was never asked but it so very important. Now, I was able to make a decision based only on what WE want. Not what we think it SHOULD be. Now, we can really make our home reflect our personalities and genuinely enjoy its uniqueness.
Another quick example that has to do with the marketing of my brand. I remember hearing years ago, don’t use pink in marketing. It’s trashy. Well, I LOVE bright pink. But because I heard that, I never used it. Plus, is it really the color to use when I’m trying to help people create calm and stillness in their life? Heck yes it is! I want people to be inspired and excited to practice stillness. Again, an example of making decisions because of how I’m conditioned to think it ‘should be’
So now the question of the hour, who’s really calling the shots in your life? What decisions are you in the middle of making to where you could really use some clarity on this question? What INSPIRES you?
Answer this one questions by answering 3 other questions… You have a real opportunity to dig a bit deeper.
- Does this decision put in you in creation mode or keep you in survival mode? Meaning does your decision make you want to create, explore and move forward or does the decision keep you alive in the same place. NOTE: sometimes survival mode is necessary depending on the situation
- Does your inner light switch turn on and create a vibrant glow within your thoughts? These are thoughts you are eager to share with others.
- Are you at peace with your decision?
